Fiber Optics
Fiber optic wiring consists of networking cables that contain strands of thin glass or plastic. These thin “fibers” transmit data using light pulses instead of standard electrical signals. This provides a much higher speed of data delivery and communication since the information is literally travelling at the “speed of light”.
Some benefits of fiber optic wiring are:
- Significantly higher speeds – up to 100Gbps
- Stability – fiber optics are unaffected by interferences that might hinder normal electrical wiring
- Distance – information tranfered using fiber optic wiring can travel for long distances without much data loss
- Security – since fiber optics use light instead of electronic signals, they are much harder to tap into than standard cables
- Life span – fiber optic lines hold up well over time, providing long term solutions with limited maintenance needs
Applications of fiber optic wiring include:
- Telecom and internet applications
- Medical equipment
- Transportation and automotive
- Surveillance and security systems
